the storm is going to be huge and i don't want to be bored.

I'm in upper Delaware and I'm preparing for this "Storm of the Century." I hope if you're going to be in the way of this thing, you've prepared! We're looking at getting 24 inches. I hope you guys have a good book to read or a cool project to work on for the next couple of days! I went to Target early in the morning to make sure we were stocked and prepared for 8 ft! Ok not really... and actually we better not be snowed in for more than two days or we're in trouble lol

My projects for the following few days will be:

1. Decorate my new dining room hutch. I paid a whopping $22.50 for this thing, and can I just tell you how impressed I am with myself for that? Yes. Here it is.

2. I got the boxes in the mail that are the perfect size for each cubby in my Expedit bookcase. So the Husby and I will probably get to working on covering them in canvas fabric and making them awesome.

3. My nursery room. I have to get that thing in shape! It is still such a catch-all room and I want it well decorated.

& since we'll all be bored at home, and hopefully shopping online... here are a few fabulous warm accessories to check out:

My Bedroom Makeover

Yesterday was spent re-arranging, re-organizing, and re-decorating our master bedroom. We moved all of the furniture, put up new linen curtains, hanged new items on the wall, and revamped some decor we already had.

I re-covered a large canvas with Amy Butler home decor fabric in gray. Timber Kitty happily relaxes on the bed.

My bedside 'table.' I covered the middle suitcase with matching fabric as the wall hanging (after removing the hardware), and spray painted the top suitcase from an icky blue to black to match the older larger one at the bottom.

We lined our old dressers up next to each other. A sweet oval mirror was placed on the wall, and a large white frame surrounds my fabric-covered cork board. You will also find a retired Longaberger basket and two vintage jewelry boxes.

A close up on my fabric covered framed cork board. First the cork was covered in natural canvas fabric, then I hand sewed each button onto this gray fabric and stapled it on.

& Just to give you a broader idea of the room...

A coat hanger holds our accessories.

Idea: IKEA EXPEDIT BOOKCASE insert / box alternative.

Earlier this week my husband put together our new 6 foot Expedit bookcase from Ikea. Most Ikea fans know it well. & Since I've wanted said bookcase for over two years, now that I have it I want it to look nice. Going on the bookcase is a lot of books, art supplies, and baby things. It is very much a combination that looks.. a mess.

Ikea has some nice options for box inserts, but the lowest priced option is still $5 each. I'm too cheap for that.

We are not shall I say.. monetarily endowed. In fact if I can get it cheaper anywhere else, I will. I also like a creative challenge, and to be able to have a customized look. I live for the hunt of the good price. It makes me feel alive. What can I say? It feels good to work hard for a good price. I'm a Provers 31 woman! Hear me roar pay with pocket change!

Okay so here is the idea I will be implementing. It will cost me more in time than say.. just driving 2 hours to Ikea to get the $30 boxes, but since my complete total should be well under $50 to cover all 25 blocks of this bookcase, I will be paying myself with creativity & the feeling of success.

Here is the bookcase:

Reminder: it is a 6 foot square, completely wall covering bookcase! Huge!
The largest Expedit bookcase $199 at Ikea

Each square is 13" (33cm) tall and wide, and it goes about 15" deep. At first I was excited to find that I own three 13" icky plastic milk crate boxes, and I covered them with yellow and white faux bois wall paper. From there I thought I need to buy more but I couldn't find them anywhere online. I guess I don't know the correct name for them. So from there I thought, well... let's just use cardboard since a lot of those nice inserts are just cardboard dressed up.

Uline.com is a packaging supplier and they have a lot of great organizational items as well. I went to their boxes page, typed in the size I need and wallah!

Oh joy! The perfect shape. And guess how much each one of these cost! ¢76 each! Seventy six cents each? Under a dollar.. ohh I felt like a genius. (My Imac just told me I spelled genius wrong and I had to fix it.) I looked online for other stores that sell the same thing and they were all about the same, and I wanted to use Uline since I've used them before and I just like their service and their site and lalala, point is: ¢76 vs. Ikea priced boxes. *Note shipping costs to your area! In any case I'm sure it'll be under $1.20 a box.

But we have issues:
1. Ugly
2. No handle
3. Unneeded flaps

These issues are easily handled especially for the creative types like myself. Actually, probably for most people so never-mind the creative part. It is just about time and effort, really. So, I solved the issues.

1. Issue: Ugly.

The boxes are just corrugated shipping boxes, nothing special. Sometimes that natural shipping-chic look is what you're into, sometimes not so much. (I do like to use kraft jewelry boxes)

Pretty Options:
Fabric of choice. Paper of choice. Even paint of choice if it isn't too thick of a paint. You don't want to warp the box. Fabrics that I would consider using:

A natural linen or canvas, maybe with a color.
Found via flickr.

Possibly a coordinating patterned fabric. Say, Amy Butler.

Or, maybe a wallpaper, wrapping paper, or scrapbooking paper I really like. Hallmark stores carry a product called "Adhesive Wrap" that is sticky like the back of a sticky note, perfect for wrapping the straightest lines and it helps the paper not to pull away from the boxes at all. They have some attractive styles, but not one I'd personally choose. I'd have to do some picky shopping if I was going to choose a pattern at all (fabric, paper whathaveyou), So let's move on.

2. Issue: No Handle. In any case, the handle you use should be hefty enough for a good pull, but never pull hard enough to warp that box!

Since the boxes are the exact fit to the entire square, once you push that box in you aren't getting it out easily without a handle (or pushing it through the other side)

Handle options:

a. Create a ribbon/lace/rope/fabric handle by adhering each end of a piece of ribbon to the inside of the box. Like a tote, the handle will hang and you'll be pulling the box from the top. You could also just poke two holes* through the box, and knot the ribbon from the inside. That would be a good way to make sure you are pulling from the center of the box so you don't warp it. You may want to choose a heftier ribbon or even rope for strength when you pull!

*Note: You could also use eyelets and setters to create a clean looking hole with a metal frame.

b. Secure a pull handle to the box. There are a lot of really nice styles that you can buy at any hardware store. I'd look for something light. It isn't going to secure through wood, just some cardboard. Keep that in mind. I found ¢37 cent plastic handles online! I am stoked. If you can find me a better deal than that I'd be very pleased! This is the option I'm going with.

b2. Maybe a pretty knob is all you need! This one is ¢66 cents.

3. Issue: Unneeded Flaps

Cut them off or fold them in. Easy. They'll ship to you flat and you can take a box cutter and slice them off straight. The end.

- - -

Second idea:
For the boxes with heavier items where pulling them might warp the cardboard, why not cut out just the front of the box? You could make it look like the boxes but it would be just for show in front of whatever you're hiding. Make sure to keep some of the sides and some of the bottom so that it will stand.

So that's my idea. We will see how well it works out. When I make them I will make sure and add them here so you all can see!

I'm sure there are a lot of other ideas out there. Do you have more ideas for a good handle pull or decorating the boxes? Let me know!
